Our highly practical Microsoft Excel for Beginners course introduces you to this integral part of the Microsoft Office suite. Coordinating with our expert tutors, you’ll familiarise yourself with Excel’s software environment, and learn the essential skills you’ll need to create and format spreadsheets with confidence.

Who is the course for?

While it is preferable that you have some keyboard and mouse skills, there are no real prerequisites for this course. It is designed to introduce anyone who is unfamiliar with Excel to how the software functions, and impart basic skills that will be valuable to almost any office or digital media role.

Learners on our Microsoft Excel for Beginners course will learn to produce simple spreadsheets with basic formulae, produce basic charts, and structure and layout their spreadsheets in a neat and visually pleasing way. The course is ideal for anyone who uses Excel sporadically, or as a preamble to a more advanced course.

  • Customising the Quick Access Toolbar

  • Use mouse shortcut menus and keyboard shortcuts

  • Understanding worksheets, columns, rows and cell referencing

  • The formula bar, status bar and name box 

  • Using the New Help Feature

Editing

  • Entering different data types, text, values, dates

  • Editing cell contents and simple corrections, spell checking

  • Deleting cell contents and undo/redo

  • Using AutoFill and Auto Calculate and FlashFill

  • Cut/copy and paste – understanding the clipboard

  • Save, close and open workbooks

Calculations – Formula and Functions

  • BODMAS – The order of calculation

  • Relative, absolute cell referencing, fixing cell references

  • Arithmetic calculations and operators

  • Simple functions – sum, average etc.

  • Create and use range names

Formatting

  • Moving/copying rows and columns

  • Adjusting/deleting column and row dimensions

  • Aligning cell content and text and number formatting

Printing

  • Set up page breaks and use print preview and page break preview

  • Page set-up options, headers and footers
