Why book this course?

Newly appointed first line managers often have superb technical skills, which is the reason why you are promoted in the first place. What may be lacking is the very different set of skills needed to manage others. Without this experience in communication and planning, you may struggle to shine in other areas.

This course will help you understand the basic skills involved in managing and developing your staff, helping you to transition into your new role. As well as teaching you the fundamentals of what a first line manager does, you’ll learn key strategies for communication and motivation, and how to manage your new workload effectively.

Our Introduction to First Line Management programme is accredited by The Institute of Leadership & Management.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at anyone who’s new to the role of management, or existing first line managers and supervisors with little or no management experience.

Learners will gain a better understanding of the role of a first line manager, what it involves, the authority you will have and the skills you need to perform it effectively.

What content will the course cover?

  • The role of a first line manager.  What should I be doing?

  • How much authority do I have?

  • How do I communicate effectively?

  • How do I manage my friends?

  • What motivates my staff?

  • How do I get it all done?

  • Prioritising your workload and understanding delegation

  • Introduction to handling interpersonal conflict.

What will I get out of the training?

First line managers have to think and act like a manager from the outset, and this can naturally be daunting. Our Introduction to First Line Management course is designed to answer some of the questions at the forefront of your mind, such as:

  • How do I cope with stepping up into a new role and what should I really be doing now?

  • How do I get my points across and motivate my old workmates and team to undertake the jobs they are assigned?

  • How do I tell people they're doing a great job, or tell people they're doing a bad job?

One of the unique attributes of Kent Trainers’ courses is our bespoke approach to training. By discussing your questions and concerns with our trainers and your peers, you’ll gain insights from a variety of sectors and industries, and develop personal skills that will apply to your own unique circumstances.

What is my experience?

I have been fortunate enough to have worked across the globe, with over 20 years in senior management and training roles. Throughout this time, I have gained a wealth of experience working across a diverse range of teams, cultures, and industries.

My roles in learning and development have been across both the private and public sector. These included working as a European Training Manager, based in Italy, as well as Senior Lecturer, delivering customer service training to NVQ's levels 2 & 3. Whilst working as Head of Training at a Kent based consultancy, I also headed up the delivery of ILM programmes and became the Internal Verifier for all courses up to level 7.

In 2006 I launched my own Training and Business Consultancy, allowing me to incorporate my knowledge of Business Management with Training.
